The end of the year is approaching rapidly, and just like previous years, I ask myself, “Where did the year go?”. It has been a challenging couple of months for me. Keeping a close eye on what was happening in Tasmania was impossible to achieve. It is a good learning opportunity to reflect on difficulties; some can have a real sting, and some are an opportunity to show your best attributes. The emotional investment into Tasmania was present, no matter how you view it. The emotional investment clouded my mind when I knew what I needed to do. Today, more than ever, to have a successful business requires more from the owner. What is the “more”? It is that ability to see forward, to have a visionary view of the world around you, and as Star Trek says, “boldly go where no man has been” or something like that. When you take that leap of taking your business into another area, unless you remain focused on your other business, you run the risk of failure across the board. It was like that for Tasmania. Trusting the people you have on the ground to maintain the passion I had put into the business was highly overestimated. The short period that Tasmania was left to run along as normal, was the most destructive period for my brand and my business. The choice to shut down the operations in Tas was sensible, calculated and necessary. I could focus on Cairns. So, with all of that, I have learned some key points of business leadership that I will carry with me for future decision-making. Cairns continues to grow and develop. I can see a vision here, a direction to take the business into. Many have asked me what the “Tactical” bit in your name means. It is simply that I don’t want my staff to clean as if they are reading a script. They need to make a cleaning plan with the client that best fits their needs at a time when money is difficult to part with. The client may wish to change the plan, which is fine with me. The client’s involvement and input make Tactical Cleaning Australia different from other cleaning companies. Many prospective clients feel the business is only available for crime and trauma cleaning. While that is a component of our cleaning abilities, it is far from our only cleaning. I also feel that there is a possibility that the logo and the name could influence some prospective clients. However, conversely, I always get feedback that my vehicles are seen out there because of the logo. I am proud that I have remained firmly of the belief that our logo must remain; the colour and style might need a tweak to make it less impacting the negative thoughts around it. The growth of my team and their continued involvement is partly due to my desire to educate and retain people. I am proud to say that I have a diverse and inclusive team. It brings a melting pot of ideas and suggestions for improvement. I genuinely believe there is sufficient room in Cairns for the cleaning we can offer. I also believe that we must gain a stronger foothold in the cleaning industry in Cairns. I know me and my team can achieve this. So, I ask you, do you get the best return for the money you provide your current cleaners? Do your cleaners involve you in the decision-making?
